8 Days of Retreat, Recitations & Prayers for the Well-Being of the U.S. & the World

The current period is one of an unusual and concerning level of escalating danger within around the world and particularly in the U.S. related to extreme polarization, increased risk of further war, escalation in climate change and related environmental damage, discrimination based on race and gender, and political instability.

Along with other efforts, as an expression of a uniquely Mahayana Buddhist response to these developments, I've recently consulted with Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche (who gave strong encouragement) and so am initiating a project of 8 days of retreat dedicated to peace, healing and compassion related specifically to these political and related social and environmental dangers.

Our plan will be to hold one day of intensive retreat per month for 8 months in a row.

Each day of retreat will begin just before dawn with everyone taking the 8 Mahayana Precepts. The retreat day will then include group recitations of The Sutra of Golden Light; The Sanghatta Sutra; and other practices, mantras and prayers!

We will be holding these retreats at Guhyasamaja Center, which is in the suburbs of Washington , DC. Anyone is welcome to attend and participate. We are also welcoming any other centers, sangha groups or individuals outside of the DC area to join us in this process for the well-being of our nation and planet. (If you do decide to hold a retreat elsewhere whether as a group or an individual, then please let us know so we all can rejoice together!)

Saturday November 17 6:45 AM to 4:30 PM

Saturday, December 8 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Note that the start times of the retreats are designed to allow everyone to take the 8 Mahayana Precepts together which is traditionally done just before the sun has risen.

Also note that the precepts include taking vows for 24 hours to not kill, lie, steal, engage and sexual activity, and so forth. They also include eating only one meal on that day which includes no meat, fish, eggs, onions or garlic. So, at Guhyasamaja Center we will have a pot luck lunch on each retreat day. If you can, please bring some item to share that does not have any of those items.

These are the first two of 8 days of retreat. We will announce the 6 dates for 2019 by early December.
