Nagarjuna's poetic presentation of the fundamental teachings of the Great Vehicle, or Mahayana, is one of the most widely quoted sources in other commentaries on the Mahayana path. The Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (first-second century C.E.) wrote his celebrated poem Letter to a Friend as a gift of advice to a South Indian king. Despite its short length, Nagarjuna's Letter to a Friend covers the entire Mahayana path, combining a practical approach to daily conduct with a theoretical exposition of the different stages leading to enlightenment. Nagarjuna’s text explains in a very pragmatic way how to integrate spiritual values into daily life, giving advice on avoiding distractions and living with ethical discipline. It is therefore of particular interest for those who wish to cultivate a spiritual practice while continuing to live and work in society.
These teachings are open to and appropriate for complete beginners as well as more advanced practitioners. A copy of the root text will be provided.
