2020 Fundraising Appeal

To Friends and Members of Guhyasamaja Center,

As you all well know, 2020 has been and continues to be an unusual year—one that has presented unique challenges to people all over the planet as every nation and household adjusts to cope with the difficulties presented by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

At Guhyasamaja Center, we've also adjusted. We quickly shut down all in person meetings to prevent the center from playing any role in further spreading the virus. (Fairfax County recently noted that there is still "exponential growth" in cases within the county and other experts have noted that DC and its suburbs are currently among places in the US with the highest rates of COVID-19 among those tested, so it's not at all clear yet when it will be safe for us to again hold in-person meetings). In an effort to support all of you spiritually during this time, we moved all of our classes and events to an on-line format, using Zoom to meet.

Ven. Dondrub has continued offering Discovering Buddhism and other programs in that way, and Lorne Ladner, PhD completed the final classes of The Middle Length Stages of the Path to Enlightenment on Zoom and has now begun teaching another Basic Program class—on The Heart Sutra—on Zoom. We've also been sharing links to other on-line offerings by great lamas like HH the Dalai Lama and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche and will continue doing that. And we're working on hosting some visiting teachers who'll teach Zoom classes as well.

We never charge for Dharma teachings. All of our events are by donation. Obviously, this year we are not able to receive in-person donations at the center as we usually do. So, this is our annual Saka Dawa fundraising letter. We are aware that at this time, some people are undergoing great financial hardships while others are not. If this is a time when you've unexpectedly been faced with unemployment or other financial hardships, then we ask that you enjoy our offerings and not worry about donating. On the other hand, if you are in a fortunate position and are able to help during this time, then your doing so will play an important role in helping the center to survive financially through the global pandemic.

Although we aren't meeting in person, the center continues to have costs related to our mortgage, real estate taxes, electric bill, website fees, costs for visiting teachers, and the like. Your donations will help us to meet those costs so that we will be a in a good position to again meet in person when doing so is safe. So, if you are in a position to do so comfortably then we ask that you go to the center's website and make a donation via Paypal or send a check to the center's PO Box.

We make this annual appeal during Saka Dawa—the month of the Buddha's birth and attainment of enlightenment—because the merit of offering is said to be greater during this time. Lama Zopa Rinpoche cites a Vinaya scripture which states that the power of karmic results are multiplied by one hundred million times if you make an offering on the day of the anniversary of Buddha's enlightenment, which falls on June 5 this year. So, even if you can only make a small donation on that day, we suggest that you generate a big heart of love and compassion and then do so with a sense of joy in creating a vast positive karma!

With love and prayers for everyone's remaining safe and healthy during this time and for everyone's using this time to progress on the inner path of love and wisdom, progressing towards enlightenment for the welfare of all beings,

Lorne Ladner, PhD
Director, Guhyasamaja Center
