A Message from Guhyasamaja Center regarding the Coronavirus

Dear Guhyasamaja Center Friends,

The Buddha's teachings emphasize how everything that arises due to causes and conditions is impermanent, changing moment to moment. They also emphasize how we are all interdependent. The current world-wide spread of the coronavirus is a reminder of these fundamental truths about existence. In terms of our interdependence, the nature of this virus is a reminder that we must take care of ourselves in order to take care of others, and we must take care of others in order to take care of ourselves! If we each take actions to help protect ourselves and others from catching the virus, we are thereby helping to protect people all over the planet—because we are all interconnected.

With these truths in mind, the board of the Guhyasamaja Center is monitoring the quickly developing circumstances regarding the virus in our region. For now, we will continue holding classes in person at the center. However, if the situation worsens in Fairfax County (or the DC area more generally) then we may cancel classes temporarily in the future to protect our members and the public. So, please check our website and/or emails for updates as things continue to unfold.

Also the board is requesting that anyone who is ill with symptoms of a cold or flu should not come to class until they are well. Even if you don't believe that your illness is due to the virus, please be conservative and cautious in such decisions to protect others.

The center has purchased hand sanitizer and disinfecting spray to be used at the center. Please use the hand sanitizer and the good soap we've purchased for the rest room to keep your hands clean. We will use the disinfecting spray at the end of each class to do our best to keep surfaces often touched by many people germ/virus free.

In terms of prayers and practices to do in relations to this global crisis, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has recommended reciting the mantra of Tara, the female Buddha of active compassion. And our spiritual director, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, has also given advise which you can access via this link:
